October 7 marked the fifth annual Manufacturing Day, a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. Thousands of manufacturers around the U.S. hosted students, teachers, parents, job seekers and community leaders at open houses, plant tours and educational sessions to showcase modern manufacturing technology and the stimulating jobs available.
“Manufacturing Day truly dispels old, negative myths about manufacturing and highlights the shift from a labor-intense environment to one of high-tech, robotics and computers,” said Dr. Chris Kuehl, managing partner at Armada Corporate Intelligence and FMA economic analyst. “It also provides opportunities to communicate how manufacturing is a big part of GDP and our economy.”
Participation in Manufacturing Day has grown each year. In 2015, more than 2,600 live events were held attended by more than 225,000 students and 55,000 parents, educators, job seekers and others, and data shows the day made a positive impression on participants. A Deloitte perception survey developed in collaboration with The Manufacturing Institute was distributed to the more than 2,500 manufacturing hosts to gather data from 2015 attendees. The results showed that MFG Day events foster positive perceptions of the industry:
- 81% of respondents are more convinced manufacturing provides careers that are both interesting and rewarding
- 71% of student respondents are more likely to tell friends, family, parents or colleagues about manufacturing
- 9% of educators are more convinced manufacturing provides careers that are interesting and rewarding
- 90% of educators indicated they are more likely to encourage students to pursue a career in manufacturing
Also, just in time for Manufacturing Day, data just released by Reshoring Initiative says that more than 260,000 jobs have been brought to the U.S. from offshore. Reshoring Initiative’s founder and president Harry Moser says that it is a new dawn for manufacturing careers in America. “A strong skilled workforce is key to reshoring and manufacturing growth,” he said. “Development of a skilled workforce begins with motivating a higher quantity and quality of recruits.
